Syn Festival Edinburgh

Syn Festival Edinburgh is back! After three successful festivals in 2014, 2015 and 2016, Syn Festival Edinburgh 2017 will be bigger, better and more vibrant than ever before. Featuring over 100 emerging artists, performers, musicians and filmmakers, this year’s project is a creative experiment on the complex relationship between the arts and the multiple meanings, uses and interpretations of myth and, especially, of the idea of transformation. The free visual arts exhibition “Metamorphosis-Transformation” runs from 9 – 22 March 2017 at the Out of the Blue Drill Hall.

Metamorphosis has always been considered one of the most fantastic mythical motifs, as expressed through literature and other arts. Since the beginning of humankind’s existence, myths of transformation have remained unrivaled in the Western world as sources of imaginative inspiration for art and literature. From Greek to Scottish mythology and from folklore to contemporary fiction, the act of metamorphosing from one physical form into another is a common theme in the mythologies of various cultures. On the other hand, in biology, metamorphosis is a profound change in form from one stage to the next in the life history of an organism, as from the caterpillar to the pupa and from the pupa to the adult butterfly.

Considering art as an act of metamorphosis and as a procedure that transforms materials into new objects, new images, and new ideas, 21 emerging artists working in various media, present their works in an attempt to re-examine Scottish, Greek and European mythology and to understand the substance behind their fictional cover, as well as behind the folktales of transformation.
